Unplug It!

In Hazel's backpack I got this flyer:

Now I'm in favor of having fun playing in the tree fort or making snow angels (in April!) as much as the next guy, but NO TV (or computer or whatever whatever whatever) for a week--and the week of spring break? This is a punishment for hard working mothers everywhere!

Some of my favorite parts are highlighted:

(for fun).  Do Not--and I mean DO NOT do any of these things for fun.  Two and a Half Men?  Fine--everyone hates that show, it is NOT FUN.  But Spongebob? Off-limits for sure.

Included websites: Perfect!  Ever since my family started watching TV (for fun) we have forgotten what else to do together!  Thank goodness for websites to remind us.

Special Recognition: What about special recognition for mothers?

I tried to hide the flyer before Hazel saw it--because I know the guilt is going to hit her hard when I turn on Toy Story on Monday.

I challenge my class to do something similar every year…however, I don't have the audacity to do it the week of spring break…

Ours comes up in a couple of weeks. I think spring is a great time for it--but not spring break. It does help everyone reset and realize that they enjoy things besides the computer. My 13-year-old has informed me that he won't be participating this year, but he forgets that I can change his password.

two and a half men is a terrible show. Every time it's on at someone elses house and I say something like "gross, hate this show." they giggle, settle in and announce how they think is is good.

I am glad to hear that you too, think its dumb.

this is a jail sentence for mothers everywhere. We are in the middle of intense training with Lucy to GET HER to sit for one program. Just ONE. I'm about to loose my marbles and if TV saves us all, then so be it.

I knew you should have come to CA for spring break! Now you're stuck in the snow with no TV.

Darn public schools trying to indoctrinate our children!

Our stake did this for the month of August last year- yeah the month your getting prepared for school, going on long trips in which a portable device would be helpful. We couldnt use any technology! My kids had to constantly remind me and I was always trying to make exceptions! Good luck!

What happened to the separation of church and state? Yes. I worship TV. Zing!

oh heavens. Last week my visiting teachers came over, so I said to little 4 year old Bruinhilda that came with her mother that she could go downstairs and watch "Dinosaur Train" with my kids. Her eyes got all big and she said "CARTOONS?" I mean, it's PBS KIDS. I almost feel like a good mom when i let my kids watch that show. Then my visiting teachers talked and talked about how they don't have t.v.'s... so this is a treat for little Bruinhilda. Yeah, awesome for them. Now leave me and my t.v. addicted family alone.

Maybe you can send Hazel over to a friends house while you watch toystory. or she can color in the corner. sounds fun. ;-)

I love your blog and they don't come any cuter than Hazel! I have to admit that I never liked the no TV week thing--over a holiday no less. I usually bribed my kids to not worry about participating (takes away some of the guilt)!

Well I think you better switch schools. They just put our week of no tv as a little blurb in the newsletter which I never read very carefully. If I need to, I just skim right over that part, and the part about school really starting five minutes before anybody thinks it does.

I thought the same thing when Tavinder brought home that note. No Way. Not over Spring Break.

I have two kids and live without a tv with no problem. It gets much easier after you adjust--I promise!

that does seem incredibly stupid and silly to do this the week of spring break. punishment indeed!

What kind of crazy masochist came up with that super-duper idea? I would suggest finding out who it is and then completely disregarding anything and everything they say from here on out.

Ironic that they want you to avoid the computer but they give you a website with great ideas for family activities. Duh. I was so glad to run into you at the store on Saturday, and sad that I was on the phone in the midst of a family crisis so I couldn't really talk. If I could have talked I would have told you I love your blog. Maybe next time?

I have tried to do this same challenge on my own and it is hard, a lot harder than I thought it would be, for myself, that is.
