Since I Left out Details

His name is George Ames Baker Wells. George is Jed's paternal grandfather's name. He died before Jed's parents were married, so Jed never got to meet him. He was a good and hardworking man with a dairy farm and four great sons. He had dark, curly hair, and after baths, so does our Georgie. Ames comes from Jed and my favorite book Gilead, by Marilynne Robinson. Named for the good Rev. John Ames. Read the book if you haven't already--it will make you appreciate life more than you have before. Baker is my dear grandma's maiden name. After interviewing her to write a history of her, and loving her and her parents so much because of the experience, I wanted to use her name. (Besides it is a lovely name isn't it?) I am already named after her--her middle name is Jayne. It is fun to have a son share another of her names.

And now I will go into great and gory detail about the birth experience. Because that's what people do on blogs, right? And Jed is just doctoring all the birth photos and videos so you can feel like you were right there along with us! Oh just kidding.

He weighed 9 lb 8 ounces. That should be gory enough for you.
I love this boy.

Dear Jaynie, What a lovely little essay about your new son. I am so proud to have him carry the Baker name. Somewhere my dear father is so pleased. And he too had beautiful black hair and big, very expressive eyes. You use words wonderfully well, Jayne. Jed, your photo essays are always stunning. And, our tiny boy is smiling...we are smiling in response. Love you always, Grandma

Oh Jayne, I thank you from the bottom of my heart for not getting too gory. My future children also thank you.

Dearest Jayne,

I have a little gift for little George. But experience indicates that it may take me a few days to get it mailed or delivered (it has already taken too many days!), so I thought I'd leave my love here in the meantime. =)

George is perfect! Fits right in to your family! I love his little smile in that last picture! And I love his name! Gilead is also my favorite book (I have been slowly rereading it these past few months, as it is a great balm).

I hope your recovery is going well. I remember baby days as wonderful and hard (!).

Know that we are thinking of and loving your family (Lucy has written on all but two pages of her journal and can't wait to show you!)!

Hope you're all snuggled up warm in this crazy snow!

Love, love, love
